Creating a Price Book in Salesforce

One of the foundations of CPQ and the products that your company sells is the Price Book.  Price Books are used to house products that are sold by your company.  A Price Book in Salesforce can have both active and inactive products.  In this blog we will walk through how you can create your first Price Book.  In a future blog, we will discuss how to individually add products and finally how to mass upload products into your Price Book.

Create a Price Book

We can easily access the Price Books in Salesforce by navigating to the App Launcher. Once we’re in the App Launcher, click on Price Books.

Price Book Object

Once we click Price Books we will be presented with a screen showing the recently viewed Price Books (or another default view you may have configured).  In this instance, there are not any Price Books configured. This means we will need to create one in order to have our Products associated with a specific Price Book.  To create a new Price Book select the New button from the top right hand side of the screen.

Add Price Book Details

After you click the New button you will be presented with a pop-up window. In the window, you will input the name of the Price Book, the Description, as well as two checkbox fields.  One for “Active” and one for “Is Standard Pricebook”.

New Price Book Details

In this example I have named the Price Book “Test Price Book” and copied that same info down to the Description field.  In a production Salesforce instance, you would likely want to add more context in the description field that helps users understand what its purpose is.  The active flag I have marked as true and the Is Standard Price Book field will not be editable as the Price Book that comes standard from Salesforce will have that checkbox marked as true.  Thus we are not able to have multiple standard Price Books.

Once that information is input you will see the Price Book listed and you can then begin to create Price Book Entries (adding SKUs to a Price Book) as well as other configurations.  We will discuss those in a future blog.
